About Alan Ivicic, LCSW-R

After almost two decades working across mental health, I’ve come to believe that the most meaningful work I can do is with couples.

Couples therapy is harder than individual therapy. It’s also more rewarding. When two people who love each other find their way back to connection after conflict, betrayal, distance, or simply the slow erosion of attention, the work is rare and real. That’s the work I want to do for the rest of my career.

Training and Approach

My clinical work integrates the Gottman Method, the most extensively researched approach to couples therapy, with Emotionally Focused Therapy and sex therapy techniques. I completed Level 2 Gottman training in 2023 and have pursued extensive continuing education in EFT and sex therapy. I use consultation with senior colleagues on complex cases.

I hold an LCSW-R, the advanced clinical license issued by New York State.

Why I Work with Couples

Most couples wait an average of six years between noticing a problem and seeking help. By the time they sit on my couch, they’re exhausted, often resentful, and unsure if change is still possible. My job is to help them figure out what’s actually happening underneath the conflict, and decide, together, what they want to build next.

I don’t take sides. I don’t assign blame. I work with both partners as a single unit, while honoring each person’s individual experience.
